Bethe, Hans (Albrecht)
(2 jul. 1906, Estrasburgo, Alemania–6 mar. 2005, Ithaca, N.Y., EE.UU.).

Físico teórico estadounidense nacido en Alemania. Huyó de Alemania en 1933 y enseñó en la Universidad de Cornell (1937–75). Demostró cómo el campo eléctrico que rodea a un átomo en un cristal afecta los estados de energía del átomo, trabajo que ayudó a la formulación de la mecánica cuántica y aumentó el conocimiento de las fuerzas que gobiernan las estructuras de los núcleos atómicos. Fue el primero en proponer el ciclo del carbono, para la reacción de fusión termonuclear del hidrógeno en helio, como fuente de producción de energía en las estrellas (1939). Dirigió la división de física teórica del proyecto Manhattan, pero trabajó en la era de posguerra para denunciar la amenaza de una guerra nuclear. Se le otorgó la Medalla Max Planck (1955) y el Premio Enrico Fermi (1961), y recibió el Premio Nobel de Física de 1967.
